3. TASK & MISSION

The Defence attaché at the Embassy is the representative of the Netherlands Ministry of Defence and the Netherlands Armed Forces in Ukraine. In this capacity, he is the first point of contact between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Ukraine in defence related topics. This includes a liaison-role between the Armed Forces of both countries (if required), the monitoring of developments and trends within the Ukrainian National Defence and the reporting thereof to the Netherlands Ministry of Defence and Foreign Affairs and the Armed Forces. He is also acting as an advisor for the Netherlands Ambassador in Kiev on defence related topics. Furthermore he will assist/advise the Netherlands defence related industries in establishing contacts with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

4. COOPERATION BETWEEN THE ARMED FORCES

Defence cooperation between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Ukraine started in 1995, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the two responsible Ministers. The rapid growth of the bilateral cooperation program (which is reviewed on an annual basis) led to the decision to place a Netherlands Defence attaché at the Embassy in Kiev. A few years later, a Ukrainian Defence Attaché was placed at the Ukrainian Embassy in The Hague.

The bilateral program mainly consists of:
- Visits of experts and VIP’s to exchange knowledge and experiences.
- Training and education on various levels in the different branches of the Armed Forces (Army, Air and Naval).
- Military-medical activities such as courses, exchange and donation projects.

The Defence Department at the Royal Embassy in Kiev monitors and assists in establishing and improving the contacts between the Armed Forces of the two countries on all levels.
